57,000 Personnel to Benefit from Work at Refinery Site, Says Dangote
Aliko Dangote, the President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited. He has unveiled plans to bolster the workforce at the Dangote Refinery Project site from 40,000 to 57,000 personnel in the upcoming months.
Currently, the project employs 29,000 Nigerians and 11,000 foreigners at the site situated in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos, boasting the world’s largest single refinery project with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. Dangote highlighted that the present ratio of approximately three Nigerians to one expatriate will further increase with the influx of local talent.
During a recent broadcast on Arise TV in Lagos, Dangote underscored the significance of the refinery project as a crucial contributor to building local capacity in Nigeria. He emphasized the substantial training opportunities provided to Nigerian workers, citing the project’s role in creating skilled individuals proficient in various fields relevant to the oil and gas sector, such as electrical, welding, and mechanical erection.
Dangote expressed his motivation for undertaking the refinery project, citing a desire to address Nigeria’s dependence on petroleum product imports. He lamented the country’s reliance on imports despite its abundant oil resources and sizable population, stressing the urgency of domestically refining Nigeria’s crude oil.
The business magnate framed the refinery project as not only a national imperative. But also a catalyst for economic transformation across sub-Saharan Africa. He highlighted the potential for job creation and economic growth, envisioning a scenario where the refinery’s operation would significantly boost revenue streams for governments, enabling investments in critical sectors like infrastructure, health, and education.
Furthermore, Dangote emphasized the need for Nigeria to diversify its economy away from sole reliance on crude oil exports, advocating for proactive measures to ensure long-term economic sustainability.
