Tell Me About the Award:
The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society (CSRS) at the University of Victoria offers one-year graduate fellowships for MA and PhD students beginning September 1, 2026. These fellowships provide financial support, academic resources, and a vibrant scholarly community for students whose projects explore the relationship between religion and society/culture across history or in the present.
Which Fields are Eligible?
Projects may cover religion in relation to:
- Ethics, health, environment, and public policy
- Gender and sexual identity
- Technology, media, art, and literature
- Human conflict and law
- Philosophy and natural sciences
(Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome; religion must be a significant component.)

Graduate Research Fellowship
Who Can Apply?
- Graduate students (MA or PhD), primarily from UVic but open to students from other universities.
- Applicants must be at the writing stage of their thesis/dissertation during the fellowship.
- One-year MA students at the writing stage are also eligible.
- Reapplication: MA awardees may reapply only at the PhD level; PhD students may hold the fellowship once.
- Open to both domestic and international applicants (self-funded travel, housing, visas, and insurance required).
How are Applicants Selected?
Applications are reviewed by the CSRS Program Committee in December 2025. Selection is based on:
- Academic merit and project relevance
- Clear alignment with CSRS’s mandate
- Strong recommendation letters
